Changes in laws and regulations heavily impact how HR departments operate and serve their employees. This means HR professionals must be diligent in understanding how these changes affect current and prospective employees and their business. A proactive approach will be critical to staying compliant and understanding the complexities of doing so.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), for example, recently announced it would add 600 revenue officers by September to support greater accountability efforts, emphasizing the importance of payroll compliance. Don Fort, chief of IRS criminal investigations, stated, “Employers know the rules — they must deposit and report employment taxes accurately — this is nonnegotiable.” With 72% of revenue collected by the IRS coming from payroll taxes withheld by employers, and as the IRS plans payroll tax compliance sweeps across the country this year, staying compliant is a must for every employer.
