About the Team 

Lead a team of 9 engineers on one of Paylocity's most visible employee-facing products. Community is often described as a workplace version of Facebook, helping employees connect, communicate, and engage across their organizations. The next chapter is even more exciting: evolving Community into a true Communication Hub across the Paylocity platform.

Recently transitioned from the US to our Czech engineering hub, the team is also driving a major modernization initiative - transforming a legacy codebase into a modern, scalable architecture using engineering best practices such as TDD, automation, and AWS (EKS).


We're looking for a proactive leader who can set clear priorities, navigate ambiguity, leverage data to make informed decisions, and enable predictable, high-quality software delivery. This is a unique opportunity to shape both the future of the product and the growth of the team behind it.


Position Overview

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Lead and manage an engineering team of 8 to 12 engineers, ensuring alignment with product and business  
  • Own the overall health, scalability, and quality of products within the team’s domain. 
  • Drive technical execution and delivery of high-quality, scalable software solutions. 
  • Empower and unblock the team by establishing efficient execution and operational  
  • processes, ensuring high velocity and impactful delivery. 
  • Facilitate and continuously improve team processes, including development, planning, on-call rotations, bug triage, and metrics review. 
  • Drive execution on projects/goals that may extend beyond the immediate team’s scope, ensuring cross-functional collaboration. 
  • Coach and mentor engineers, supporting their career growth and skill development. 
  • Work with a single team and product partners within a domain that may contain multiple products or applications while managing dependencies and expected outcomes. 
  • Collaborate with Product, Security, and Business teams to align technical strategy with company objectives. 
  • Ensure adherence to security best practices and compliance standards. 
  • Monitor and analyze team performance metrics to drive continuous improvements in quality, velocity, and efficiency. 
  • Manage team capacity and resource planning, ensuring the right talent is allocated to meet project goals. 
  • Stay up to date on industry trends and emerging technologies, applying relevant innovations to enhance team effectiveness. 

Core Responsibilities 

  • Estimate initiatives into monthly/quarterly incremental milestones and deliver them on schedule; share bi-weekly updates on the progress .
  • Report Core Engineering metrics (DORA/SPACE) and System Performance and formulate a quarterly tech debt roadmap to manage/improve those metrics .
  • Be a Scrum Master and manage bi-weekly sprints, partnering with Product Manager .
  • Manage your individual team members’ performance.

  • We track development through regular performance conversations and feedback loops, ensuring measurable progress against leadership expectations and competencies. 
  • Weekly 1:1s, Staff meetings.

  • We work on Succession planning for our leaders based on their performance and their desire. 

Education and Experience

  • BS degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology. 
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with 3+ years in a management role. 

 Technical Skills 

  • Understand, assess, and support the work of your directs 
  • Ensure your team uses company standards and best practices (paved roads) 
  • Leverage data to make informed decisions (quality, monitoring, usage, etc.) 
  • Understand the architecture and dependencies of your product area 
  • Ability to review Pull Request (when necessary) 
  • ClaudeAI / Github Copilot experience 
  • Ability to Vibe Code tooling to improve engineering processes 
  • Cloud experience (AWS/Azure/GCP) 
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as DataDog/Splunk/Grafana/New Relic 
  • Nice to have: Previous ASP.NET and C# experience 

 

Physical requirements 

  • Ability to sit for extended periods: The role requires sitting at a desk or workstation for long periods, typically 7-8 hours a day. 
  • Use of computer and phone systems: The employee must be able to operate a computer, use phone systems, and type. This includes using multiple software programs and inquiries simultaneously.
