This is a fully remote position, allowing you to work from home or location of record within the U.S. with no in-office requirements. You must be available five days per week during designated work hours. The work arrangement for this role is subject to change based on business needs and individual performance. This may include adjustments to on-site requirements or schedule expectations, as necessary.
Position Overview
We’re modernizing Paylocity’s Workflows architecture and evolving it into a resilient, scalable platform that powers automation across our HCM suite. As Senior Product Manager, you will own the end-to-end migration from legacy workflow services to Temporal, drive our API first strategy, and lay the groundwork for AI agents orchestrating human-in-the-loop processes on a trusted data platform.
You’ll define the roadmap, standards, and adoption plan for platform services used by multiple product teams, partnering deeply with Engineering, Security, and Customer Operations. This is a hands on, technical PM role where you’ll translate platform capabilities into measurable business outcomes: performance, reliability, developer velocity, and customer value at enterprise scale.
Primary Responsibilities
The below represents the primary duties of the position, others may be assigned as needed. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Own the platform roadmap for Workflows (Temporal): activity/worker strategy, versioning, retries, compensations/sagas, observability, and SLAs/SLOs.
- Lead the legacy to Temporal migration: author migration playbooks, deprecation policies, and rollout waves; ensure safe cutovers, backward compatibility, and zero-downtime patterns.
- API & contract leadership: define API standards (versioning, dempotency, pagination, error models, webhooks, events), schemas, and data contracts with clear governance.
- Reliability at scale: partner with Eng/SRE to set SLOs, error budgets, and autoscaling policies; drive instrumentation (traces, metrics, logs) and capacity planning.
- Security & compliance: embed RBAC, auditability, data retention, PII controls, and policy enforcement into workflow/approval patterns across Company Set.
- AI & agents enablement: design platform hooks for LLM/agent orchestration, human approval steps, guardrails, and deterministic handoffs (prompt/trace capture).
- Cross product orchestration: enable payroll/HR/time/docs integrations through reusable workflow primitives, launchers, and connectors (internal & partner).
- Stakeholder management: align Engineering, Operations, Security, Support, Implementations, and CS on milestones, change impacts, and client communication.
- Measure what matters: define KPIs (p95 latency, success rate, cost per run, developer NPS, migration % complete, incident MTTR) and run a cadence for continuous improvement.
- Go to market for platform changes: create release notes, migration guides, internal trainings, and enterprise rollout plans for Company Set clients.
- Coach and elevate adjacent PMs/ICs on platform thinking, APIs, and distributed systems trade offs.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree required (CS/Engineering or equivalent experience preferred).
- 8+ years in Product Management (or equivalent) shipping platforms or distributed systems at scale.
- Proven success leading major architecture migrations (e.g., workflow engines, service meshes, event platforms).
- Strong fluency in APIs (REST/gRPC), eventing (e.g., Kafka), cloud/Kubernetes, IaC (e.g., Terraform), and observability (tracing/metrics/logs).
- Demonstrated partnership with Engineering and Operations/SRE to set SLOs, manage incidents, and drive reliability.
- Experience building for enterprise customers (multi-entity/Company Set), with security, audit, and compliance in mind.
- Comfort designing experiences that enable AI/agents with safe guardrails and human-in-the-loop steps.
- Exceptional communication. Able to align technical and non-technical stakeholders and drive crisp decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Temporal (workflows/activities/workers), saga/compensation patterns, backoff/retries, idempotency or in comparable systems.
- Data platform exposure (data contracts, lineage, governance) and analytics for platform health.
- Background in HCM/Payroll/Time/Docs domains.
- Experience mentoring PMs and influencing across multiple teams.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods (7–8 hours/day).
- Use of computer and phone systems; multitasking across software tools.
