Your 401(k) isn't enough. Now what?

Webinar Date: October 7, 2026 11:30 AM CT

Closing the gap between retirement plan access and employee participation.

Seventy-two percent of private-sector workers have access to a retirement plan. Only fifty-three percent use one. That gap is not a communication problem. It is a design problem, a fiduciary problem, and a financial wellness problem, often all at once.

In this session, Dr. Shari Simpson sits down with two of the country's most respected retirement advisors to examine what separates a plan that exists on paper from one employees actually use. Jeanne Sutton, CFP and CPFA with Strategic Retirement Partners, advises both plan sponsors and individual employees at the same time, a rare position most advisors never hold. Michael Smith, CEFEX-certified fiduciary and Managing Partner of Insight Financial Partners, built his practice after years inside the payroll and recordkeeping machinery most HR leaders never see until something breaks.

Together, they cover the real cost of financial stress in the workforce, the legal exposure buried in routine plan administration, what good fiduciary process actually looks like in practice, and the specific moves HR leaders can make right now to build a plan employees understand and use.

Key Objectives:

  • Explain what fiduciary responsibility means in day-to-day practice for an HR leader, including where legal and administrative exposure actually lives beyond the investment lineup.
  • Distinguish between financial wellness and retirement readiness, and identify where employer responsibility starts before the 401(k) ever enters the conversation.
  • Apply at least one immediate action on both the people side and the plan design side to improve participation and reduce employer risk.

Speakers

Dr. Shari Simpson Dr. Shari Simpson Senior Manager Thought Leadership | Paylocity

Shari Simpson, EdD, is the host of HR Mixtape and a senior thought leadership leader at Paylocity. With over two decades of experience across training, talent, payroll, and employee relations, she brings curiosity, candor, and real-world perspective to every episode. Shari holds a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Innovation, along with an MBA, MHRM, and SHRM-SCP certification.

Mike Smith Mike Smith CPFA | Insight Financial Partners

Mike founded Insight Financial Partners to bring employer retirement plans the fiduciary discipline most never get. The Financial Times has twice named him among the country's top retirement plan advisors, and his firm carries CEFEX certification, a standard most advisors never pursue. He came up on the payroll and recordkeeping side at ADP, so he reads a plan from the back office up, the part that stays invisible until it breaks. He holds an MBA from DePaul and built his practice on one conviction: working people deserve to retire on their own terms, with dignity.

Jeanne Sutton Jeanne Sutton CFP | Strategic Retirement Partners

Jeanne advises both the companies that sponsor retirement plans and the employees who live inside them, a vantage point few advisors hold. SHRM audiences know her as the 401k Lady. For more than a decade she has turned dense plan decisions into language people actually use, appearing in national media from Forbes to NPR along the way. She holds an MBA from the University of Kentucky and serves as a CFP Board Ambassador, a role that sends her around the country teaching people to make sense of their own money.
