Paylocity’s Monica Roberts Shares Insights on Attracting and Retaining Top Talent

January 13, 2022

A seasoned talent acquisition leader provides learnings from her own career journey – and turns them into actionable advice.

Monica Roberts, Vice President of Talent Acquisition for Paylocity, was featured recently in Authority Magazine’s HR Strategy Series. The series was designed to give business leaders strategies for hiring and retention from experts in the field.

With recruiting employees and retaining workers so prevalent in our rapidly-changing business world, Roberts pointed out that “if you don’t change through innovation, you’ll be forced to change by competitive necessity,” and reminded readers that companies not offering flexibility become recruiting targets for more progressive companies.

Among her top strategies for retaining employees, Roberts shared:

  1. Make employees feel heard and valued, both as professionals and as people. She pointed out that when employees feel a sense of belonging, they generally stay longer and are more fulfilled in their roles.
  2. Use succession planning to help employees can visualize their individual growth. A new role is the first step in a long journey at a company. Roberts advocated starting the conversation about growth right out of the gate.
  3. Invest in training and educating employees to assist in employee development. Today’s employees expect to grow, and learning opportunities are more important than ever to attract and retain top talent.

Writer Kage Spatz covered a broad range of topics in the interview, including formative moments from Monica’s own professional journey, strategies for attracting top talent, and some of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility initiatives underway at Paylocity. She also gave thoughts on attracting and engaging talented prospects who have not reached out directly to an employer.

When asked about ways to make employees feel valued, she advised managers to get to know their teammates on a personal level, and find specific, meaningful ways to make them feel appreciated. “Your personal attention costs nothing, but it is worth a fortune,” she observed.

On a lighter note, the writer asked her for a favorite life-lesson quote, and Monica shared a line from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

“Every decision we make is a choice,” she said.
