Senior Cloud Engineer
As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you will architect, deploy, and manage our container orchestration platform that powers our Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) Payroll and HR products across multiple development, staging, and production environments. You will be responsible for designing and maintaining highly available, scalable Kubernetes clusters on AWS EKS while ensuring optimal performance, security, and cost efficiency.
You will serve as the subject matter expert for container orchestration and work closely with development teams to enable seamless deployment patterns, implement GitOps workflows, and establish best practices for containerized workloads. Your role will be critical in maintaining the reliability and scalability of our platform infrastructure.
Who you are:
You're a cloud infrastructure specialist who is passionate about container orchestration and Kubernetes. You thrive on designing resilient, scalable systems and have deep expertise in managing production-grade EKS clusters. You understand the intricacies of container networking, storage, and security, and you’re always looking for ways to optimize infrastructure performance and reliability.
- Expert in Kubernetes architecture, operations, and ecosystem tools with a focus on AWS EKS
- Passionate about infrastructure automation, GitOps, and declarative infrastructure management
- Strong advocate for infrastructure as code, monitoring, and observability best practices
- Experienced in designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines for containerized applications
- Detail-oriented, collaborative, self-motivated, and focused on operational excellence
During the first six months, you will:
- Onboard to Paylocity’s EKS clusters and containerized infrastructure, learning our multi-cluster hybrid cloud architecture, networking setup, and security implementations across development, staging, and production environments
- Learn how we leverage AWS Organizations and Control Tower as it related to EKS cluster management
- Learn our infrastructure automation frameworks, GitOps workflows, and Kustomize application configuration management practices while contributing improvements to cluster operations and developer self-service capabilities
- Understand our strategic infrastructure roadmap and contribute to EKS upgrade strategies, cluster optimization initiatives, and container platform evolution
- Deploy and maintain EKS clusters with focus on high availability, auto-scaling, and cost optimization
- Implement and refine monitoring, logging, and alerting for containerized workloads using Kubernetes-native and AWS tools
- Establish and maintain infrastructure documentation and runbooks for EKS operations and troubleshooting
Required Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or 5 years' experience implementing and managing cloud infrastructure solutions
- Previous experience of 3+ years with Kubernetes or EKS
- Previous experience of 2+ years working with AWS EKS, including cluster setup, networking, and security configurations
- Deep understanding of container orchestration concepts, including pods, services, ingress, persistent volumes, and operators
- Experience with Kubernetes networking (CNI plugins, service mesh, network policies)
- Proven track record of managing production workloads on Kubernetes with a focus on reliability and performance
- Strong infrastructure automation skills for complex distributed systems and container environments
- Excellent troubleshooting skills for complex distributed systems and container environments
- Experience with container security best practices and compliance requirements
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to create technical documentation and collaborate across teams
Technical Experience:
Experience and advanced proficiency with some of the technologies we use:
- Container & Orchestration: Kubernetes (1.24+), AWS EKS, Docker, Helm, Kustomize, ArgoCD, Container Networking, Kubernetes operators
- AWS Services: EKS, ECS, ECR, ALB/NLB, VPC, IAM, Secrets Manager, Parameter Store, Control Tower, Orgaizations, S3
- Infrastructure as Code: AWS CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform
- Scripting: Python, Bash, TypeScript
- SCM: GitHub
- OS: Linux and Windows
- CI/CD: TeamCity, Octopus Deploy, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar
- Telemetry: AWS CloudWatch and CloudTrail, Datadog, OpenTelemetry
