Cloud Software Engineer 

As a Cloud Software Engineer, you will drive complex tools and processes surrounding our AWS cloud infrastructure that supports our Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) Payroll and HR products across multiple development, staging, and production environments. You will assist and guide product development teams as they leverage AWS services, and partner with other infrastructure and cloud teams to design and improve processes that empower teams to work faster and more efficiently.


You will act as a point of contact and liaison to many teams (particularly software development, security, and infrastructure) to: coordinate the implementation of new cloud resources and environments; upgrade existing systems; troubleshoot and resolve cloud infrastructure issues; and implement security measures to keep our cloud infrastructure secure, scalable, and performing optimally.

You enjoy solving complex problems and have a passion for automation that makes systems more reliable and scalable. You're someone who can translate technical concepts across teams and believes in continuously improving architecture and processes. 

  • Enthusiastic about automating cloud infrastructure and processes that make it fast and easy for our software developers to provide great software to our customers 
  • Likes interacting with and guiding other teams to ensure they are enabled to do the work they need to do 
  • An advocate for good architecture, design patterns and best practices in cloud infrastructure 
  • Detail-oriented, collaborative, self-motivated, and responsible 

During the first six months, you will: 

  • Onboard to Paylocity’s custom-built internal platforms designed for hybrid connectivity, cloud security, and specialized workload management between our on-premises infrastructure and AWS cloud environment 
  • Learn how we leverage AWS Organizations and Control Tower to manage our multi-account strategy, implement governance, ensure security compliance, and streamline account provisioning across our AWS environment  
  • Learn our internal environments, process and change management frameworks, while proactively contributing ideas and improvements to optimize systems, operations and developer productivity 
  • Learn and contribute to our strategic roadmap and team goals while recognizing and surfacing risks/unknowns to ensure work remains aligned with our broader organizational objectives 
  • Support, implement, and maintain AWS cloud infrastructure and services 
  • Perform code reviews and provide consistent, useful and constructive feedback 
  • Provide support to our engineering community, responding to support requests as they come in. 

Required Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree or 5 years' experience implementing cloud solutions and maintaining Public Cloud services and resources 
  • Previous experience of 3+ years with AWS 
  • Ability to understand a variety of complex architectures 
  • A natural problem solver who can quickly understand, troubleshoot, and remediate complex problems in cloud environments 
  • Experience with improving Developer Experience by automating and ensuring any gaps and bottlenecks are addressed 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and code solutions that automate manual or repetitive tasks, reducing the need for human intervention 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including creating documentation for consumption by Software Development end users using tools such as Confluence 
  • Knowledge of git version control systems and GitHub, with experience managing collaborative workflows and pull request processes 
  • Must have a strong sense of curiosity 
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as to communicate and collaborate with software development teams, infrastructure teams, and leadership

Experience and advanced proficiency with some of the technologies we use: 

  • AWS Services: Control Tower, IAM, EC2, EKS, lambda, Organizations, S3 
  • Code: C#, .NET Framework, Node, Python, TypeScript 
  • Scripting Tools: Bash, PowerShell, Python 
  • SCM: GitHub 
  • OS: Linux and Windows 
  • Infrastructure-as-Code: CloudFormation, AWS CDK 
  • CI/CD: TeamCity, Octopus Deploy 
  • Telemetry: AWS CloudWatch and CloudTrail, Datadog, OpenTelemetry
